Active Travel – what is it?
Active Travel refers to modes of travel that involve a level of activity.
The term is often used interchangeably with walking and cycling, but Active Travel can also include trips made by wheelchair, mobility scooters, adapted cycles, e-cycles, scooters, as well as cycle sharing schemes
Encouraging residents to change to more sustainable and healthy journeys by walking, wheeling and cycling is one of the most cost-effective ways of reducing transport emissions, decreasing traffic congestion, and improving health outcomes.
Clearly for many Kingsfleet residents working further afield with no public transport available then some car journeys are unavoidable. Car sharing can be used to reduce single occupier car journeys bringing benefits to drivers and passengers.
KingsFleet is designated as the Sustainable Urban Extension to Thetford – and this comes with a target to make Kingsfleet transport sustainable by reducing car journeys and increased use of Active Travel modes. National census data (from 2011) shows that typically in Thetford 69% of journeys are made by car with single occupancy. The target for Kingsfleet is to reduce this to 60% over a five year period.
Changes in travel modes will be measured annually, the first surveys were undertaken in October, with the next surveys in September or October next year.
We are keen to encourage Kingsfleet residents to engage with Active Travel and help achieve the target of reductions in car usage. Over the course of the next few months, we will be holding events and disseminating information to Kingsfleet residents. Travel information for Kingsfleet is available on the Active Travel webpage on this website.
We are also keen for Kingsfleet residents to become involved in this process and form an Active Travel Steering Group to promote ideas and develop initiatives.
Thetford Management Co. has appointed Andrew Bingham to the position of Active Travel Coordinator for Kingsfleet. Andrew can be contacted by email at activetravel@kingsfleet-thetford.co.uk if you would like further information, or to join the Steering Group.
